Killarney #4 – Event 15 – Results
So the UK voted to leave the EU…hhmm…so life carries on. In Western Province that means cycle racing on a Sunday. Not even the mist that descended on the Killarney Race Track could deter our cyclist from making the racing hot.
Life Path Health – Time Trial # 4 – Event 14 – Results
Time trialing – by definition, an event which requires the rider to pedal as fast as humanly possible over a set distance – remains a painful pursuit so we introduced the 2 man team time trial to share the pain at the Life Path Health Time Trial Series. The Winter solstice is but a few days always and sunny days are becoming a distant memory at this time of the year. Most of the weather predictions were for rain to arrive in the Riebeeck Kasteel valley in the late morning so we took the decision on the Saturday to move the start time an hour forward. All concerned were informed to try and be at the venue as early as possible to make the early start at 8:00am. Conditions in the morning were chilly with a nasty biting headwind on the route up to the turning point. The event was split into two competitions with some electing to ride as individuals and others in teams of two.
HEROChallenge 3 – Burgundy Estate – 2016-06-12
<
Success in road criteriums requires a mix of good technical skills — in particular, the ability to corner smoothly while holding the line on the road, as well as rapidly and sharply — and riding safely with a large group on a short circuit and exceptional “sprint” ability to attack other riders and repeatedly accelerate hard from corners.
Organizers like to give the riders a sight of the route before the commencement of a criterium so that that they are not caught unawares of the twists and turns of unfamiliar roads.
Category 3 and Ladies
The Burgundy ‘lap to check out the course’ was ridden so hard that we rolled up to the start snorting like thoroughbred racehorses. The calm before the storm so to say because the first few laps caught out many a rider who has enjoyed the comfort of the bunch in recent road events. The main protagonist of the fast pace was Elfrieda Wolfaardt who is one of our top lady track cyclists and the 47 year old Colin Parsons who until recently had been racing in Category 2.
Ladies
- Maroeskja Matthee
- Chante vd Merwe
- Nicola Gillomee
Category Three
- Collin Parsons Bellville
- Bjorn Pienaar (Cycle Teknix)
- Byron Brouwer (Kinetic)
Elimination – Category one
This event was ridden over a shortened course of 1 kilometre and many of the riders were caught up in a crash at the first corner when Theuns vd Bank lost a tubbie and was unable to control the ‘slide’ into the corner. This caused a number of riders to exit the race early on. Timothy Jenkinson of Team Giant kept a tight rein on the front of the bunch which was quickly whittled down to the strongest riders in the Cape.
Results
- Bernard Esterhuizen – Team Giant
- Clint Hendricks – RoadCover (winner of the Argus)
- Timothy Jenkinson – Team Giant
Category Two – 45 minutes plus a lap
The race started fast and then there was a bit of a lull which enabled Wynand Dippenaar – Kinetic CC ,Guy Le Ray Cook (Ind) and the eventual winner Brian Dodkins (Cycles Direct CC) to break away from the bunch. They built a lead of 30 seconds over the chasing bunch which they maintained to the end. Wynand Dippenaar is gearing up to represent the WP Schools at the CSA Youth Festival and is finding some great form shared the workload with Brian Dodkins and Guy Le Ray Cooke. The chasing bunch were unable to make any inroads into the lead. Brian Dodkins has been riding in support of the current Category Two point’s leader Robin Harris and this weekend it was his opportunity to race for line honours. This he did by outsprinting Wynand to the line.
Results
- Brian Dodkins (Cyles Direct)
- Wynand Dippenaar (Kinetic CC)
- Guy Le Ray Cook (Ind)
Category One – 1 hour plus 1 lap
There was a flurry of attacks early on in the race which resulted in a number of cyclists finding the pace just a bit too hot to handle. There were a number of attacks during the next half an hour of which none were able to stick. The defending Argus Cycle Tour champion Clint Hendricks took a flyer on the 2nd last lap but he was pegged back by the Lights by Linea rider Stefan Ihlenfeldt. Once the gap had been closed James Tennant of Light by Linea attacked with young Ian Lategan of Stellenbosch Pro Cycling on his wheel, they swept into the last corner at a furious speed with James holding onto first place from Ian in second and Max Sullivan rounding off the podium in third from a group of riders and a fast finishing bunch.
Results
- James Tennant (Lights by Linea)
- Ian Lategan (Stellbosch Pro Cycling)
- Max Sullivan (Stellenbosch Pro Cycling)

Track Classic Series – Event 5 – Results
The Classic Series saw a great turnout for event 5, held at the Bellville Velodrome on 3 June 2016.
Rawsonville – Event 12 – Results
The sun was just rising over the mountains when racing started in earnest. Category 2 and Category 3/Ladies rolled over the start line and raced towards the first corner of a 12 kilometre triangular circuit. The local Montana High School and Worcester Wheelers supplied the refreshments and support personal for the event which started and finished at the Dasbosch Cellars on the Louwshoek Road.
Category3/Ladies – 72 km
With barely one lap completed a group of four riders slipped away from the bunch. Two riders dropped off the group finding the pace just a bit too hot to handle despite the brisk conditions around the route. None of the clubs which are in a battle for 2nd spot in the inter club competition were able to co-ordinate a concerted effort to bring back Chris Morgan(City CC) and Bjorn Pienaar (Cycle Teknix) and they were able to maintain the lead right up to the finish. The closest the bunch got to bringing them back was 200 metres and then it ‘sat up’ with no-one wanting to close the gap.
Franz Lemmer won the bunch sprint with Chris Morgan in 2nd and Bjorn Pienaar taking the win.

Ladies :
- Maroeskja Matthee (Bestmed)
- Liezel du Preez (Cycle Teknix)
- Nicky Giliomee (ind)

Category 2 – 96 km
Category 2 seemed to take a break from their normally fast pace and they were content to roll around the route and keep the break of about five riders in their sights. The break was brought back with ease and the race wound up for the sprint.
- Reinhardt Marais,(Kinetic)
- Zaheer Harris (Kinetic)
- Oswin Booysen (ind)

Category 1 – 120 kms
Winter is almost upon us but the beautiful Autumn days make racing on the road such a pleasure. Sunny with no wind or rain was the forecast. Last week’s Cat 1 race was aborted which meant the riders were raring to race. After four laps of the 10 lap race the big split came.
The break consisted of 17 riders from Team Alfa Body Works , Team Giant , Lights by Linea , Stellenbosch Pro Cycling and Aurecon. The sponsored teams don’t have it all their own way in the WP League and Bellville CC, Cycle Teknix CC, Velokhaya, UCT and CycleLab were also represented. Rohan du Plooy of Lights by Linea the current overall leader of the points competition didn’t ‘hoek’ the attack and had to be content to sit and watch the gap grow. The bunch was working together like Trojans and it was no surprise when the speedo consistently reached 50kph. The constant high speed eventually told and Lights by Linea teammates James Tennant and Dirkie Nel crossed the line on their own in 1st and 2nd place respectively with Ray Cox – Bellville CC in 3rd just a few metres behind.
