On Sunday 9 April, the Killarney Race Track played host to vehicles of a different kind – ones that run on pedal power! Local cycling club, The Outriders, together with Just Property and Western Province Cycling Association (WPCA), celebrated a festival of cycling which had something for everyone, from kids as young as two years old to the elites who were out to score points on the League board.

The events included circuit racing for the serious riders (split into category 1, 2 and 3), Juniors and Schools racing, a Criterium, as well as an inter-club, ladies only, and kids’ races, the last three providing non-licenced riders the opportunity to experience the thrill of racing at Killarney. The Just Property kids races took place on the adjacent karting track, with the top three in each age group receiving medals. All participants went home with a certificate.
The future is bright for cycling in South Africa
The day’s events culminated in a 20-minute criterium. Designed for maximum spectator value, the course took the riders on a technical and tricky route through the pits. ”I loved the crit format”, Category 1 winner Martin Fryer enthused. “It was quite nerve-wrecking, but it was technical, short, interesting, and great for the public – we should have more races like this in the Western Cape.”
Killarney provided the perfect venue, with its smooth, car-free surface, as well as being safe and spectator-friendly. Organiser of the event and Chairman of the Outriders was thrilled with the success of the Festival, “It was a fun and family-friendly event. We really wanted to provide something for every level of cyclist and it’s safe to say we succeeded in doing that. However, the event couldn’t have been pulled off without the support and commitment of the club members.”
The Outriders meet every Saturday morning outside Planet Fitness in Parklands and encourage riders of all levels to come and join in their rides. Visit www.theoutriders.co.za for more about the club and the various ride times on offer.

Provisional Results (Awaiting Confirmation From WPCA Timing)
WP Track hosted yet another successful event to identify riders to represent Western Cape at the Track Nationals in April at Bellville Velodrome. With a limited number of spaces available for final selection riders raced full steam from start to finish with the hope of making the squad.
WP Cycling is able to share with you the first events for the 2017 calendar. We have applied for and awaits event permission from the City events office. The first 7 events are:
11 Feb 2017 – 99’er – Road Race. The 99’er is a new addition to the calendar and WPCA look forward to building a solid relationship with the organisers of the event. Cyclist times will count towards their WP seeding for the rest of the league season and will also score points towards the leader board.
18 Feb 2017 – Saldanha Bay/Sports Trust – Road Race. 130km for Cat 1 and 2, 80km for Cat3 and all scholars. All youth riders of 18 or younger ride for free.
5 March 2017 – Century City – Criterium Race. The event is hosted as part of the annual Century City Sports Festival. Cycling is just one of the events hosted by the center during that weekend and it is a technical circuit with cobble stone sections.
26 March 2017 – The Lady Loch Circuit near Wellington – Road Race. The 4 hills along the 12.6Km circuit always make for a challenging race.
2 April 2017 – Big Bay – Circuit Race. A new race in the Big Bay area close to the Seaside Village shopping centre.
22 April 2017 – Red Hill – Road Race. A road race via Red Hill through Simon’s Town over Smitswinkel.
29 April – 1 May 2017 – 3 Day Stage Road Race – Durbanville. WPCA will be hosting a 3 day stage race at the end of April just starting just past the R312 and R304 intersection to wards Wellington. There will be team categories and day one will start with a TT prologue in the morning.
The road season will then continue towards the end of July. Updates of the additional events will be available on the WPCA website.
Many people have asked us about why these two important events are held over the same weekend. Unfortunately this is a result of events outside of our collective control. Let us try explain.
Event organisers start planning for their events long in advance and picking a date tends to be one of the first decisions to be made. As it happened both organisers fixed their dates, on two consecutive weekends, more than 6 months ago. However, subsequently the African Continental Cycling Championships were announced on the same dates as the SA Road Championships which created the initial conflict.
Cycling South Africa has to be supportive of the continental event and needs to host its national event prior to that, so the SA Road Championship had to be moved. It was therefore decided to move it one week earlier, now unfortunately coinciding with the date of the 99er.
With most of the arrangements already made for that weekend it was not possible to move the 99er’s dates at this late stage. Further, it would be unreasonable of us to request that they change, as they have secured the date in advance, with us and with CSA.
We, the Western Province Cycling Association, would therefore like to continue to show our support (and gratitude) to the 99er event committee and we encourage those riders not participating in the SA Road Champs to support this wonderful event.
WP Cycling would like to wish Morné, Debbie and their team success with their 19th event!
