Round 4 of the league took place on Sunday, 20 August at Bellville velodrome. There was a great vibe and the great racing. Here is the link to the results:
The “Back to the 80s” event was held at Bellville velodrome on 20 May 2023.
There was significant growth on last year with more than 50 riders entering. The event is called “Back to the 80s” referring to gear ratios. Riders were restricted to a maximum ratio of 90-inch. It meant that riders had to use high cadence to turn up the speed.
Berty Mostert (WP track commission) kindly donated a Ciovita bag to be awarded to the most positive ride of the day. This went to Nuhaa Kamaldien (u13 Girls). This was her first event and she won her second race of the night by attacking the U11 boys and staying away.
Jaco Scholtz (WP track), Nuhaa Kamaldien and Ishmail Clarke (Active Bodies Sport development)
Active Bodies brought 16 riders to the track and there are more in the pipeline for the future. Complements to the work done by Glen Bonthuys (WPCA development) and Abbas Harris (Active Bodies)
John Moss (City Cycling Club)
Track cycling is an inclusive sport and events are supported by friends and family. The youngest rider at this event was 6 years old. John Moss at UCI category 70+ still took points home in the veterans category.
The next event is on Friday 23 June’23 at Bellville velodrome.
Here are the results of round one of the WP track omnium series. The event took place on Sat 19 Nov at Bellville velodrome. The final round is on Friday 2 Dec at Bellville. Riders who missed out can still enter and earn points during the 2nd round.
Well done to Sue Kirk and the rest of the team! You all pulled off a perfectly organised ride. I have had my share of inaugural rides and this ranks amongst the best of in terms of planning and execution. Also huge thanks to all the towns and their traffic departments as well as the marshals. I was really impressed with how this played out.
As for the actual ride, load shedding resulted in us pulling up to the start at 7:01 but thankfully the start was delayed until 7:10. I was surprised when I saw 2°C on the way there – but it was confirmed soon as we started to move – it was blooming cold.
I did my own thing on the hardtail and kept a steady pace of 26km/h, soon a whole bunch of roadies seems to have formed behind me with the odd one popping in for a chat every now and then. I did see 1.4°C on the way to Piketberg but one guy said his Garmin showed 0.1°C at some stage. So a very chilled first stretch. Soon as we crested the Piketberg climb the roadies dropped me, my setup just is not that fast downhill. I did have my 2.35 knobbies at 3 bar but that is about as far as I went in terms of changing things VS my normal setup.
Excellent marshalling through Piketberg. On the other side I saw a lady with a mechanical issue from a far. As I came closer I saw it was a much more involved breakdown as her crank was lying on the ground I jokingly said “I would have loved to help but unfortunately I left my welder at home today“. After a second or so she burst into laughter and said, thanks, that helps. The road from Piketberg to Redelinghuis was new to me, but beautiful. I rode solo most of the way – as planned.
Stopped for a water fill up and banana at the Redelinghuis waterpoint and while I was there someone laughed “Oh is that the welder guy“. All round the vibe from fellow riders and organisers was positive and encouraging. Took a long time to reach Elands Bay, I was anticipating the climb, went past faster than anticipated. Coming closer to Dwarskersbos the roads became more and more familiar. The last stretch from Dwarskersbos to Veldrif was a treat as I ride that road a lot. I took a left at the finish back to the start to complete the 222km.
I do hope this event returns to the calendar next year, at the price it is excellent. The cold and the distance reminded me of a 30 something me doing Transkaroo, although 40 something me will never do something like Transkaroo again, this 222km ride is a more accessible challenge.
What an amazing day of racing. The sun was shining, the temperature was moderate and the wind was not as much of a factor as it could have been.
Club 100 hosted a great event, made all the more interesting by the inclusion of a King (and Queen) of the Mountain prize for the first participant in each start group to cross the finish line in first position on the FIRST crossing of the line.
The winners of these prizes were:
Cat 1 Johannes Trotzky
Cat 2 Gareth Stead
Cat 3 Philipp Schmidt
Women Hayley Preen
Well done to all of you and thanks again to Club 100 for sponsoring these prizes.
Herewith the provisional results for the Red Hill race, held on Sunday, 5 June 2022. Please direct any queries to results@wpcycling.capedjco.co.za.

Red Hill – Sun Jun 05 2022 06:30:00 GMT+0200 (South Africa Standard Time)
Oh wow – what a wet start to today’s racing. I think that the heavy overnight downpour kept a lot of riders in bed, and who can blame them? Racing started slightly later than expected at 8h15. The Category 1 race was reduced to 100km from the planned 150km, which meant that the U19’s could join them for this race. Category 2 stayed at 100km and the rest were reduced to 50km.
Category 1 saw Jaco Venter cement his lead in the league standings when he crossed the line before Callum Ormiston and JP Weideman.
In Category 2 we had Andreas Struder ahead of Frederick Botha and Steven Hayes.
The shortened race for Category 3 had Philipp Schmidt beating Guy Le Ray-Cook in a sprint for the line. Jaco Scholtz came in third just behind the 2 of them.
The women’s race was a tussle between the Paceline ladies and the UCI athletes. Danayit Tekeste took the win but there was an almighty battle for the 3rd, 4th and 5th spots with milliseconds between the ladies. Michaela Lubbe took second in the Elite ladies, behind Sharon Berne, the U19 lady from UCI who came in second overall, and first U19.
The U19 Development race was an easy win for Siphathele Sosmela ahead of team mate Asakhe Cimani with Siyabonga Nyathela taking third.
The U17 race was a run away victory for Ruan Badenhorst while the rest of the contenders were in a bunch sprint for the other podium positions.
A lot of very wet and tired cyclists enjoyed the sun as it came out for a brief visit before heading off home for a hot shower and dry clothes.

Paarl de Ville – Sun May 29 2022 07:00:00 GMT+0200 (South Africa Standard Time)
What started off a really chilly day, with temperatures around 4DegC when arriving at Opstal, turned into the most magnificent day for racing imaginable. Temperatures rose to around 18DegC and there was not a breath of wind. The 40km circuit had Category 1’s doing 3 loops to give them 120km while the rest of the guys managed a respectable 80km.
The Category 2’s finished racing first, completing 2 laps to the Category 1’s 3. Line honours went to Michael Viljoen, closely followed by Liam Higgo and Aran van Niekerk.
The Category 3 race was also closely contested but Romario Sardinha squeezing out Philipp Schmidt and Bradley Talmarkes.
The ladies, once again, saw a very strong field, bolstered by some UCI imports from the high performance training camp in Paarl, who managed to take top spot on the podium in both the U19 and the Elite categories. Congratulations to Sharon Berne for her 1st place in the U19’s and Danayil Tekeste for hers in the elite race.
The open, U17 and U19 Development race saw a mixed bag of results. Well done to all participants.
The Category 1 race was won by a single rider who broke away on the slight climb to the finish. JP Weideman taking the line ahead of the rest of the bunch – definitely a contender for league honours. Jonty Bouwer coming in second and Clint Hendricks in third. The U19 race saw last weeks 1st and 2nd positions reversed with Bachir Chennafi pipping Ethan Kulsen to the line. Third went to Tshebeletso Makgonye, as it did last week.
The league standings will be published later this week once the points have been computed.
